What if one giant gel plate print collage could become two finished paintings?
Today I’m creating a beautiful gel plate collage. I begin by painting the top section of my giant plate with light blue violet, teal, and bronze, then layer down textured scraps and handmade Kozo, starting small and building larger until the lower section is completely covered.
Once the collage is in place, I add another layer of turquoise, and when everything is dry, I roll over Prussian blue for the final pull.
Then comes the moment of truth…
I lay down a huge sheet of 300gsm watercolour paper and leave it overnight, hoping it captures every layer, texture, and detail.
The next morning… the reveal is absolutely beautiful.
But I didn’t stop there.
I cut the giant print in half, mounted both pieces onto canvas, and transformed them into two finished mixed media artworks.
