Another blast from telecommunication’s past: A 16 Mbit/s ADSL2+ modem …
↓↓↓ Complete description, time index and links below ↓↓↓
A short while ago we teared down a German Telekom ISDN NTBA which offered a whopping 128 kbit/s (link below). Now, after ISDN came DSL, respectively, ADSL. But ADSL wasn’t rolled out with today’s 50 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s.
I have here a German Telekom ADSL modem (not router!), that provides an astonishing 16 Mbit/s. That is downstream. Upstream it was just 1 Mbit/s. And we’re gonna tear that thing apart and have a look at all the chips.
00:00 Intro – a 16 Mbit/s DSL modem (not router)
01:06 Outside – three LEDs, four connectors and a switch
02:04 Teardown – four screws covered by four rubber feet
04:13 Board – three isolated areas and five (!) power rails
07:42 Chips – eight of them, two transformers, two transistors
13:20 Power – three switch-mode plus two linear regulators
14:38 Electrolytic – capacitors, no brand names, looking good
14:49 Wrap-up – that was some nice piece of equipment, bye
