And here is Part II!
Before anyone says anything - yes, the big fills throughout this are not exact replicas of Chester's (frankly there are too many to memorise), and yes, I get in a mess at 4:50!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy my attempt at this. I love the way this piece just builds and builds, with the drumming becoming ever more complex and hectic.
I accidently play a bass note at 2:50 that I am not supposed to be playing - I always seem to play that one!
The fills after 3:42 are great fun, but it is very easy to get the timing wrong, given they all end on 'ands' - it's very easy to come out of these and then start hitting the backbeat too early!
During the epic hi-hat thing that Chester does at 4:50, I get it wrong. Pants and double pants. It's very clever what Chester does - the sets of five accents every third 16th note sound great. However, when he starts to play them in groups of 9 (or is it 7, or 8 or 10???!!!) as the section comes to a close, it just throws the whole thing off (in a great way). If your internal metronome gets too caught up in the three feel, and forgets to think in terms of quarter notes, you are, frankly, fucked. And this is what happens to me...!
As an aside, I note that Chester does this 'set of 9 third beat accent thing' on the 1987 Tour and the 1992 Tour, but he did not do it in 2007! Ha! Perhaps he got nervous he would come out of it in the wrong place, like the rest of us mortals do, and he played safe!!! (I guess not though). I promise you I did get this right on earlier takes (which unfortunately overall were less accurate than this take).
The double bass drum pattern at 6:39 I find very hard. I am not much of a double bass player, and it is real tough for me this bit! This is not made any easier by the fact that by this point I can hardly hear the music, so keeping time was very difficult.
I'm glad it's done and posted anyway. It's driven me nuts this weekend, trying to get a good enough take on camera. My poor neighbours must know all the lyrics by now, and my wife keeps humming the tune!
I can tell you that there are some rather amusing out-takes: at one point I threw my sticks across the room in a rage, 'cos I cocked up those turnarounds in Part I AGAIN! Lesson - never try and record a complex Genesis cover whilst you are still steaming angry!!!!!!!
