Games that were unfortunately cancelled
Starting off we have Sonic Extreme on the Sega Saturn & PC which was supposed to be Sonic’s intended 3D mainline debut but due to development not progressing well, including employees falling ill, they cancelled the game after multiple delays which leads us to having Sonic Adventure as the 3D debut instead.
From 3D Sonic to 3D Mario we have Super Mario 64 2. After the success of Mario 64, Nintendo wanted to prepare a sequel for the N64’s Disk Drive add-on with multiplayer and a rideable Yoshi among other new features. But due to the 64DD’s failure and a lack of progress of development, the game was scrapped with elements being reused in future Mario titles.
Silent Hills was supposed to be the next big step for the Silent Hill franchise, being produced by Hideo Kojima & Guillermo Del Toro. But due to internal conflicts with Kojima and publisher Konami, Kojima left the Conan and Silent Hills was wiped from the face of the earth.
We just got a new Mega Man announcement but let’s mourn on those that didn’t make it and there’s unfortunately a lot of them. There’s Mega Man Universe which was a Mario Maker style Mega Man game, Mega Man Legends 3 and even a gritty reboot titled Maverick Hunter. These were all canceled for different reasons but they all connect to Keiji Inafune leaving Capcom in 2010 leaving Mega Man in some limbo.
Finally there was a planned successor to Diddy Kong Racing titled Donkey Kong Racing, which would’ve featured a lot more Donkey Kong County elements with animal riding rather than karts and planes, but due to Microsoft acquiring DK’s main developers Rare, they couldn’t develop for Nintendo Home consoles anymore so after trying to rework it into a different IP the project was entirely cancelled.
