This Game Genie commercial from the early 90s is such a fun blast from the past but the story behind it is honestly wilder than the ad itself. Galoob, the toy company that sold it in the US, licensed the device from a UK company called Codemasters, whose founder David Darling actually built the thing after his son got obsessed with making Mario jump higher. Nintendo was furious about it and sued Galoob in 1990, actually winning a court order that pulled the Game Genie off shelves for about a year. Galoob fought back and eventually won at trial, and Nintendo ended up on the hook for a fifteen million dollar bond after losing its appeal. Once the dust settled the Game Genie went on to sell millions of units and expanded to SNES, Game Boy, and even Sega systems.
