During the G20 summit in South Africa, terrorists launch an attack, forcing US President Danielle Sutton to take decisive action to safeguard both her family and the other attendees.
Cinesite delivered 220 visual effects shots, supervised by Alessandro Cioffi from partner studio TRIXTER. Production VFX supervision was handled by Sean Farrow, and the film was directed by Patricia Riggen.
One of the most significant tasks was creating the G20 Summit location itself — a digital hotel placed on top of the real Signal Hill, overlooking Sea Point Bay in Cape Town. The hill’s topography was modified, and a fully digital, extensively expanded building was added. The design was based on a wellness and retreat complex located 60 km from Cape Town, where many summit scenes were shot. Only the basic layout was used as a footprint before additional floors and narrative-specific areas such as the ballroom, sat-tower, helipad, and other extensions were modeled.
The entire Signal Hill area, including the iconic southern end of Lion’s Head, was digitally rebuilt and reshaped to support the story.
The surrounding Cape Town cityscape — including distant Devil’s Peak and Table Mountain — was also constructed using plates and reprojection techniques, forming a full 360-degree digital panorama. Several aerial shots throughout the film establish the summit’s location, requiring a consistent and realistic representation of the region’s geography.
At the highest point of Signal Hill, a helipad was added to the digital hotel, serving as the setting for the film’s explosive climax. The original plan was to shoot much of this sequence practically and add digital propellers and tail blades to a physical helicopter. However, many shots ultimately required a fully digital aircraft with redesigned animation and extended CG environments beyond the set.
Additional visual effects work by Cinesite includes a high-intensity gun battle on top of an elevator and in its confined interior, as well as a dramatic crash involving The Beast, the president’s armored vehicle. After being struck by multiple rockets, the car flips through the air amid a massive explosion. Working at 4K resolution with camera angles close to impact points, realistic fire, smoke, debris, and atmospheric effects were integrated with precise dynamics and detailed compositing.
