Identifying noise source and causes of intermittent errors …
↓↓↓ Complete description, time index and links below ↓↓↓
In the previous video we tried to improve the analog frontend of our ADC with an op amp and a linear power supply. However, tests showed dramatically increased noise levels and intermittent errors (link below). Let’s find out why.
First we reverse all the hardware changes since the last time we had a look at raw ADC noise levels in video 9 (link below). Then we start to rebuild the circuit, trying to keep the noise levels down. It’s tedious work and there will be a part 2.
00 Intro – fighting noise and intermittent errors
04 Recap – noise 200 LSBpp / 58 LSBrms
02 Approach – reverse all changes step by step
34 Linear regulator gone – no intermittent errors
23 OpAmp gone – noise 45 LSBpp / 6 LSBrms
10 Aux. power gone – noise 30 LSBpp / 4 LSBrms
07 RS-485 transceiver gone – noise 18 LSBpp / 3 LSBrms
42 Power supply gone – noise 4 LSBpp / 1 LSBrms
11 Summary – a lot of things contribute to noise
34 Rebuilding – starting with 4 LSBpp / 1 LSBrms noise
54 Powering up power supply – noise 7 LSBpp / 1 LSBrms
40 Connecting 9V switched to VIN – noise 40 LSBpp / 7 LSBrms
27 Pi Filter on 9V switched rail – does absolutely nothing
19 Connecting 9V linear to VIN – noise 30 LSBpp / 4 LSBrms
44 Filtering 5V with 22µF –noise 30 LSBpp / 3 LSBrms
31 Filtering 5V with 0.1/1/10 µF –noise 25 LSBpp / 2.5 LSBrms
08 Supplying 5V linear directly – noise 25 LSBpp / 1.5 LSBrms
15 Wrap-up – I’m frustrated and we’ll continue next time, bye
