Welcome back to Breakdowns & Beatdowns on Skepticus — I’m your host Adam of Nola, and today we’re taking a crowbar to one of the most persistent pieces of Christian pseudo-science on the internet:
“Homosexuality is caused by trauma.”
The video we’re reacting to comes from the Fuel Project — a content creator and professional bullshitter who’s been repeating this claim like it’s a sacred mantra since 2016… apparently under the theory that if you say something confidently enough times, reality has to tap out.
In this episode, we break down how this argument is built the same way most apologetics are built:
Anecdotes dressed up as data
Cherry-picked “research”
Slippery terminology (homosexuality → “sexual confusion” → “perversion” → whatever’s useful in the moment)
Causality hand-waving (“trauma causes gay” vs “queer kids get targeted because they’re queer”)
And the classic move: taking clinical discussions of harmful sexual pathology and pretending it applies to consenting adult relationships.
We also look at what real research actually says when you stop doing “10 celebrity bios + vibes” and start doing… you know… science.
And yes — we talk about the “ex-gay” narrative, why it’s not evidence, and how it gets used as a weapon to shame people into closets while calling it “love.”
Because if your worldview requires you to label other people’s harmless lives as broken just to make your religion feel sturdy… that’s not truth. That’s insecurity in a suit.
In this video
Fuel Project’s “trauma causes homosexuality” claim (again)
Why anecdotes are not evidence
The problem of causality and sequencing
What ACE/trauma prevalence tells us (and what it doesn’t)
Misuse of clinical material to demonize normal adult relationships
The “ex-gay” industry and why it’s so destructive
Why calling LGBTQ people “broken” isn’t “love” — it’s branding cruelty as virtue
Links & sources mentioned
Penn State Health News (ACEs prevalence)
SAMHSA (traumatic events by adolescence)
Vanderbilt University Medical Center news piece (LGBTQ+ ACEs + stigma vulnerability)
NIH study referenced in the video (I’ll link it here)
(I’ll drop the exact links in the pinned comment / description once uploaded.)
If you’re new here: Skepticus is where we read the claims, check the receipts, and refuse to let religious propaganda cosplay as “concern.”
And if you want to help shape the direction of the channel, consider becoming a member — it’s how you get a voice in future topics and it helps keep this little project alive.
As always: if anything I said offended Yahweh… he’s welcome to show up and correct me.
He won’t.
Stay skeptical.
