This is your boy Adam of NOLA, and today on God-Free Bible Study we’re cracking open a whole new book: Deuteronomy—the fifth and final book of the Pentateuch. We started at Genesis 1:1 and somehow survived Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers together… and now we’re stepping into Moses’s big farewell speech, recap, and propaganda tour.
Spoiler: a lot of this is repetition. But it’s repetition with some very telling twists.
In this episode (Deuteronomy 1–4), we dig into:
Deuteronomy as “Moses’s words”
The text suddenly shifts into Moses speaking in first person, retelling the story like an old general justifying everything. We look at how this clashes with earlier books and why the “Moses wrote all five books” claim is, frankly, ridiculous—especially when the book narrates his death and throws in lines like “as it is to this day.”
Manifest Destiny: Yahweh Edition
God “sets the land before them” and tells them to go take it—from people already living there. We talk about how this language echoes American Manifest Destiny and the theology behind “this land is ours because my god said so.”
Moses’s selective memory & PR spin
He takes credit for the justice system Jethro (his Midianite father-in-law) suggested, conveniently scrubs Midian’s contributions, and retells Israel’s refusal to enter the land like it’s all the people’s fault and never God’s broken promises.
God the Free-Will Saboteur
We hit another example of God “hardening hearts”—this time King Sihon—just so Israel can justify wiping out his people: men, women, and children, all “utterly destroyed.” Then we’re told God is the one who “fights for them,” even though it’s always swords, blood, and genocide on the ground.
Cities of Refuge & Wild West Justice
Manslaughter defendants must hide in sanctuary cities, relying on the “avenger of blood” not to catch them outside the walls. It’s less “divine justice system” and more “bronze-age vigilante code with God’s logo slapped on top.”
Moses’s no-edit clause
Moses explicitly says you’re not allowed to add to or take away from these laws—which is awkward for Christians who love to cherry-pick what still applies.
God: Devouring Fire & Jealous AF
We get the classic line: “The Lord your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.” Then Christians turn around and tell you this is actually a perfectly loving, morally perfect being. We… have questions.
Oral tradition & anachronisms
Phrases like “can still be seen to this day” and “as it is today” make no sense coming from Moses in real time, but they make perfect sense if this is written much later by people retrofitting a national origin story.
All of this, and we’re only four chapters in.
