This may be a common occurrence and I've merely never observed it before. Our Black Walnut trees (Juglans nigra) began dropping their leaves one morning after the first or second very hard frost of the season. It was a perfectly clear still morning with bright sun and relatively little wind. So the sound of the leaves falling like rain caught my attention from the house. By noon the entire tops of both trees were completely defoliated with a few leaves snagged in the branches and a few nuts still hanging from the trees. I'd be interested to hear some comments from other folks about how common this phenomena is with Black Walnuts.
Honestly they aren't my favorite tree, and I wouldn't have chosen them for my backyard, but we are short of nice trees here near the house, so we are unwilling to cut them down.
