Foursquare Touchstone is the 22nd release in the Exceptional Cask Series from the Foursquare distillery in Barbados. It’s a “Single Blended Rum” (rum from a single distillery that used both pot & column distillates). To create it, Foursquare acquired 10 casks from the cognac producer Camus & 10 casks from their Caribbean Expedition Cognac program. After being freshly dumped, these casks were filled with a 2008 vintage Foursquare and some 12-year-old ex-bourbon cask rums. Those matured for two more years in the cognac casks, leading to a 14-year blend (12 in ex-bourbon & 2 in ex-cognac). But they weren’t done yet! They also added another 14-year rum that was comprised of a blend that was matured for 5 years in ex-bourbon casks and another 9 years in an ex-cognac casks! Touchstone has been bottled at 122 proof and retails for $160. It’s a “pure rum” - as all Barbados rums are – so it’s free of any added colors or sweeteners.
Across the globe, another “pure rum” was launched, so I decided it should fit well beside the Foursquare Touchstone. Camikara is the first Indian pure cane juice rum which has been matured for 12 years in American oak casks. Its name means "liquid gold" in Sanskrit, and this bottling is meant to celebrate the land, time and Indian culture. Of course, in India the temperatures can get very hot, so after 12 years of aging, the angel’s share has reportedly caused a 94% evaporation loss! Meaning that remaining 6% is what’s in this bottle and I expect it to taste very concentrated. Because of that huge volume loss, this is a Limited Edition of only 1,200 bottles. It is bottled at 100 proof and will retail for only $100! The other thing I really like about this rum is that it states right on the bottle, “No added color, flavor, or sweetener.”
