The Fortress of Suomenlinna in Helsinki is an impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's a massive fortified group of islands in the harbour of Helsinki, constructed in the 17th century as a barrier against Russian attacks from the east. Unfortunately it was unsuccessful as the Russians conquered Finland in the 19th century, but it has lead to some interesting history.
