Bob Chapek is done staying quiet.
The former CEO of The Walt Disney Company just announced a memoir called "Behind the Castle Walls," and it is dropping September 29th from Gallery Books. You can already find it on Amazon, and yeah, we have thoughts.
Here is what we know so far. Chapek became CEO in February 2020 after nearly three decades at Disney, starting way back in 1993 as a marketing director for home video. He worked his way up through the company for 27 years before landing the top job. And then, almost immediately, the entire world shut down. Parks closed. Cruise ships stopped sailing. Movies got shelved. He was barely a few weeks into the role when COVID-19 hit and he had to figure out how to keep one of the biggest entertainment companies on the planet from falling apart.
Then in November 2022, the board fired him and brought Bob Iger back. And Chapek basically went silent. For a long time, he said almost nothing publicly about what happened. That changes this fall.
The book is 272 pages and based on the Amazon listing, Chapek is going after some big questions. Was he actually set up to fail from the start? What really led to the board's decision to bring Iger back? How did the choices made during the pandemic change what Disney looks like today? He says he spent four years thinking before deciding to put all of this on paper, and he says he wants to set the record straight on what he calls his true legacy. And through all of it, the listing says he still considers himself a lifelong Disney fan who wants the magic to last for generations.
There is also a bigger picture to keep in mind here. A Wall Street Journal reporter named Robbie Whelan is working on an unauthorized Iger biography at the same time. Disney has reportedly hired legal help to push back against that project. Some people inside the company seem to think Chapek might be one of the sources Whelan has been talking to. So this book is landing right in the middle of what is shaping up to be a pretty wild moment in Disney history.
