In the woods of Washington County, Georgia, lies a humble piece of forgotten history — the Henry Wood Family Cemetery. Unlike the grand monuments and elaborate vaults we’ve explored before, this small burial ground tells its story through simple, stamped-concrete markers and weathered stones.
Here rest members of the Wood, Bland, and Braswell families — pioneers who carved out their lives on this land in the 1800s. Henry Wood (1797–1873) and Mary Gilbert Wood (1817–1885) are buried here, alongside likely their children and grandchildren, including Sarah Anna Bland, Tabitha Jane Wood Bland, and Leila and Robert Braswell.
Though modest in size and appearance, this cemetery holds an important chapter of Georgia’s early settlement story — one of perseverance, family, and memory that has endured for nearly two centuries. Join me as we walk among these forgotten graves and bring their stories back into the light.
