In this episode of Adventures Into History, we explore an extraordinary African American church in rural Georgia that has stood for nearly a century and a half.
The congregation was first organized in 1876, when newly freed families gathered under a brush arbor to worship for nearly a decade. In 1886, the members built the simple wooden structure that still stands today. Judging from the original footings and support joists visible beneath the floorboards, this is the very building completed almost 150 years ago.
Though time has silenced its pulpit and pews, the church remains a rare survivor of Reconstruction-era African American history. Inside, you’ll see the 1976 replacements of the original pulpit and pews—already historic in their own right, now frozen in time.
