In this episode of Adventures Into History, I travel with The Other Robert into the woods of Meriwether County, Georgia, to investigate the ruins of the old Gary Plantation Cemetery.
This cemetery began as a plantation burying ground and later continued to be used after the Civil War, with a few post-war burials mixed among the older graves. Here, members of the Gary, Carter, and Wideman families were laid to rest—families who once lived and worked on this land.
Today, the scene is heartbreaking. Many of the headstones are damaged, broken, or missing entirely. What remains is a scattered collection of graves that tell the story of life and death in early Georgia, from the plantation era into the Reconstruction period.
Cemeteries like this are fragile pieces of history. Once they are gone, the stories of those buried here risk being forgotten forever. Join us as we document, preserve through video, and bring awareness to another endangered piece of our past.
