In this episode of Adventures Into History, I return to Meriwether County, Georgia, with historian Dan Akin to continue our journey into the earliest days of this land’s settlement. Our focus is the historic Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery near Manchester—a burial ground tied directly to the Magouirk (McGouirk) family, whose story we began in our previous video at Ebenezer Church Cemetery.
Before Ebenezer was founded, the Magouirk family helped establish Macedonia Baptist Church, and many of their relatives still rest here. We explore the historic graves, uncovering more family connections and community history, and venture into the overgrown section known as the old “slave cemetery”—the final resting place for enslaved members of the church before emancipation.
From pioneer families to unmarked graves that speak of a painful chapter in history, this cemetery is a powerful reminder of the stories buried beneath Georgia’s soil.
