In this episode of Adventures Into History, I’m joined once again by the Other Robert as we document a remarkable old cemetery in Troup County, Georgia.
This graveyard isn’t hidden deep in the woods like many we visit—in fact, it’s tucked behind a Burger King and gas station—yet it holds nearly two centuries of history. Some of the earliest burials here date back to the 1830s, and the grounds reflect the evolution of cemetery monuments over time.
We find everything from early settlement stone box tombs to finely carved 19th-century marble headstones, each telling its own story of faith, family, and memory. Along the way, we even discover a broken fragment of a marker discarded in the woods—a haunting sign of nefarious activity sometime in the past.
This cemetery may sit beside the bustle of modern life, but its stones remain a quiet testament to the generations who came before us. Join us as we uncover the stories written in stone and bring new attention to this historic Southern burial ground.
