In this episode of Adventures Into History, Cecil and I explore the extraordinary Estes Plantation Cemetery in the woods of Troup County, Georgia. What we found here absolutely stunned us.
Massive stone tombs rise above the forest floor, surrounded by a meticulously built rock wall. Some of the monuments tower over us. But what’s even more striking is what lies just beyond the main cemetery—an African American burial section in a gully, hidden and segregated, where enslaved individuals and their descendants were laid to rest.
This site tells a story of wealth, power, inequality, and memory. It’s one of the most visually stunning plantation cemeteries we’ve ever documented.
