In this episode of Adventures Into History, I’m joined by my friend and local historian Mike Buckner as we explore the old Searcy family plantation cemetery in Talbot County, Georgia. We were invited to visit by the current owners of the land—who also own the stunning Searcy Manor, built in 1926 on the site of the original plantation house, which burned a year earlier.
The oldest marked grave here dates back to 1871, and the site contains generations of the Searcy family. Mike shares incredible insights into the family’s history, from Rev. John S. Searcy to later descendants buried at the old homeplace. I’ve also added obituary clippings and historical articles that help piece together the story of this family and their place in Georgia’s history.
Many of these old cemeteries are located on private land and rarely seen by the public—but they still hold powerful stories worth preserving and remembering.
