Flotsam and Jetsam Drifted Away From Thrash: The Story of Drift
What happens when a thrash metal band realizes the musical world around them has completely changed?
In 1995, Flotsam and Jetsam released Drift, an album that represented one of the biggest changes in the band's career. After building their reputation with albums like Doomsday for the Deceiver, No Place for Disgrace, and Cuatro, the band found themselves facing a completely different metal landscape.
Grunge, groove metal, alternative metal, and other emerging styles had transformed heavy music. Rather than simply recreate their classic thrash sound, Flotsam and Jetsam decided to adapt.
In this episode of the Flotsam and Jetsam series, we look at the story behind Drift from the writing and recording process to the band's changing musical direction. We'll examine how songs like "Smoked Out," "Empty Air," "Missing," and "12 Year Old with a " demonstrated a band willing to experiment and move beyond its thrash metal roots.
We'll also look at the album's singles and music video, its commercial performance, the end of Flotsam and Jetsam's relationship with MCA, and the mixed reaction from critics and longtime fans.
