I found a great recipe online for catfish. I’m terrible at fishing for them. So let’s try to catch bass or bluegill, my favorite fish. We’re in the middle of a summer drought. The lake is down over a foot. But now it looks like a storm approaching. Can we catch any fish before we’re chased back inside? See the recipes, fishing equipment and much more below.

Grilled Zucchini Recipe:

Recipe taken from here: food.com/recipe/grilled-zucchini-192535

INGREDIENTS
3 medium zucchini
5 tablespoons olive oil (I used 4 in the video)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ heaping teaspoon pepper
½ heaping teaspoon cajun seasoning

DIRECTIONS
Slice the zucchini into ¼ inch fillets - longways.

Mix the olive oil and all the seasonings in a one cup mixing container or small bowl.

Coat all of the zucchini pieces in the mixture and place on a plate to take out to the grill.

Make sure the grill is pre-heated and place the seasoned zucchini slices on the grilling surface.

Cook for 5-7 minutes on each side.

Note: The zucchini should be soft throughout when poked with a fork and have nice grill marks on each side when they are done.

Bayou Fish Fillets:

inspired by the recipe found here:
myrecipes.com/recipe/bayou-catfish-fillets#mr-livefyre-ratings

Ingredients
4 tablespoons of fine-ground, low-carb bread crumbs
½ cup of almond flour
(If not worried about carbs, use ⅔ cup of cornmeal for above 2 ingredients)
2 teaspoons seasoned salt
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1½ teaspoon garlic powder
1½ teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon ground red pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder
½ teaspoon ground cumin (I forgot this in the video)
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 to 1½ pounds of catfish, bass, bluegill, or perch fillets
Oil for the grill
lemon wedges (optional)

Preparation

Preheat grill to 425° F
Combine first 10 ingredients in a gallon zip-top plastic bag. Add 2 fish fillets. Blow some air into the bag to slightly inflate it. Seal bag, and shake well. Remove fillets from bag, and place on a cookie sheet ready for the grill. Repeat procedure with the remaining fillets and breading mixture. Oil the grill. Place fillets on the grill grate, or if small, a special grill grate for small items. Close grill and let cook for 5 minutes. With a spatula, turn over fillets and let cook another 3 or 4 minutes or until the fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Serve with lemon wedges, if desired.

The boat is a Bass Hunter I ordered from Bass Pro Shops about 12 years ago. They no longer sell it. Also, this model is no longer available, but newer models like it are still sold. Check here: sportsmansguide.com/product/index/bass-hunter-ex-96-boat?a=670576&pm2d=CSE-SPG-15-PLA&utm_medium=PLA&utm_source=Google&utm_campaign=CI&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=WX2*0186929000000&gclid=COz4v7CNocsCFQmQaQod_-EG4g

The lure is a 4 inch CrawdadZ in brown / orange. It is attached to a 1/15 ounce Finesse ShroomZ. Both products are made by Z-Man Fishing Products, Inc.

The baitcasting reel is a Shimano Calcutta 50B, from about 2004. This model is no longer made.

The line is Stren original clear monofilament in 8 pound test.

The baitcasting rod is a Shimano Compre, Model CPC68MC, 6’ 8” fast action, medium power. Suggested lure weight ⅛ to ¼ ounce. Suggested line weight 6 - 12 pound test. Purchased April, 2016.

THE LAKE:
Was named Lake Ketchabigwon by the native Americans who sold me the property for a good amount of wampum. It is almost 6 acres and is located in NE Ohio.

FISH IN THE LAKE:
largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, black crappie, yellow perch, channel catfish, and grass carp

WHY KEEP SMALL BASS:
We had biologists come out and do an electroshock survey of the lake. They found too many small, stunted bass. Their advice was to remove all bass under 12 inches, and to release the bigger ones. This rule is usually the opposite in large public lakes.

Largest Fish Caught: The biggest was a grass carp with I hooked and managed to beach. It weighed over 30 pounds. Next was a channel cat (accidentally caught while bass fishing) of 10 pounds. My largest bass was 6¾ pounds caught here at Lake Ketchabigwon.
