Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (SNES 1992 Square)
Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest was released for the Super Nintendo in 1992 by Squaresoft of Japan to be released in the US, and then later brought to Japan in the form of Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest.
Emulator Used: BizHawk 2.2.2
Shader/Filter Used: 4xBRZ
Run Time: 2h58m08s
Run Skill Level: Mild frustration
First of all, if you think the game was easy, it's because anything can be easy if you take your sweet time to do it. You'll be surprised at the challenge that Mystic Quest has to offer if you don't spend time over-levelling your character and bulldozing through the game.
Compare this 3 hour walkthrough to a 12 hour Let's Play.
I could recommend getting the Fire Spell in the Focus Tower before going to Aquaria if you're having trouble, but it really shouldn't be necessary as Mega Grenades can do the job just fine.
It could also be a fun idea to grab the Excalibur while you're in Pazuzu's Tower. Pazuzu can appear randomly on 1 of 6 floors in the tower. I got a Floor 6 here, which is the floor you want if you're doing a speedrun, but it meant that I would have to go out of the way for a weapon that I won't even be putting to much use, and it just didn't seem necessary.
It really feels like even the developers thought it wouldn't be possible to finish the game in 3 hours. There's a bug in the game that prevents Ally resistances from updating. The only way to address the problem is to save and restart the game.
Your average speedrun gets around this by using a save file that already has a fully upgraded Phoebe Ally. I consider that to be Newgame+ so I didn't do that here.
This run uses no major glitches. It's possible to skip the entire Fireburg section of the game by purchasing 0 of an item, and then consuming the 00 item, eventually making a Sun Coin that will allow you to sequence break the Focus Tower.
If you don't feel like watching the whole thing, here are a few key points that will help you:
- It's really easy to over-level in this game through grinding, so grinding isn't necessary.
- Therefore, you only need to fight the monsters necessary to make it to a boss.
- You can retry any battle infinitely, so don't worry about getting a GAME OVER.
- SEEDS (MP restoration) are hands down the best item in the game, buy all of them that you can whenever you can.
- The only item worth purchasing is the CHARM BANGLE in WINDIA.
- The only battlefield worth clearing is the one that gives you EXIT.
- BROWN treasure chests are worthless, avoid them (many players think they make the game easy, when in fact, they actually make the game more difficult). The only exception is the lone chest in BONE DUNGEON that contains SEEDS.
- There's a bug that prevents Ally resistances from updating. It's possible to beat the game in one sitting, but if you have trouble, save and restart to fix the glitch. It's also possible to start a new game using a late game ally Phoebe as a base, and all of the allies you recruit will have her resistances.
- If you think this game lacks a challenge, it's because you play at a sloth's pace.
This is the first game I ever wanted to record when I was a kid. You could say this video was 25 years in the making.

Sweet Home was released by Capcom for the Famicom in 1989.
It was never released in America likely for censorship reasons.
It was released to coincide with a feature film on the same day..

Emulator Used: BizHawk 1.9.0
Shader Used: 5xBR
Run Skill Level: Succumb to randomness.
This game has a good many chances to completely kill a single segment run. Luckily, as far as RPGs go, this game is relatively short. Clocking in at around an hour to complete.
Almost every enemy in the game has a random chance of doing a move that will cause a status effect to one of your party members. Each time they use the status causing attack, it has a chance of missing. If it lands, the run is over. The only exception is curse. Curse will slowly take away the Mind Points of a character and ends when they are depleted.
Sub hour should be possible using this strategy with better luck and execution. スイートホーム [Sweet Home] RTA Any% 1h01m08s](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/cuQSJC7cGBI/mqdefault.jpg)
