Formerly located at the now-demolished Gallucci Residence Hall, this siren was removed following the building's demolition in late 2019. Sometime between then and early 2020, it was reinstalled on a wood pole at the tennis courts at Brown and Wheeler Sts., roughly 0.4 miles from its original location. I tried (and failed) to record this siren in 2018, back when it was located atop Gallucci. Back then, I was not aware testing was done on the Third Wednesday, as an error on the University website indicates the sirens are tested on the second Wednesday (the schedule is currently Third Wednesday according to the University's EM Coordinator himself). Now two years later, as a full time student living at the University, I got a success today recording it.
This siren along with two other DSA’s were installed in 2004-2005, likely in response to the Great Northeast Blackout of 2003, which knocked out power to most of the area. The Modulator in the center of campus is the most recent addition to the system, having been installed in May 2009 as part of an effort by the university to upgrade their indoor and outdoor warning systems following the tragedy at Virginia Tech in 2007.
This one was a bit tricky to record as the best I could do was set up at the intersection of Brown and King. The area it was in was mostly the field surrounded by houses rented out to students at the university, but it worked out, and nobody confronted me during the test or after.
The University of Akron tests their four sirens (consisting of three DSAs of various configurations and a MOD*4016 at the center of campus) on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 10 AM and 6 PM. Enjoy!
