Due to COVID-19, I decided to stay in my county, so I drove the 10 minutes over to Xenia this past First Monday. I decided on this SRNB at the Xenia Water Treatment Plant by the walking/bike trails as it was the closest driving-time wise to my house. I didn't want to be around as many people that I might have been if I was in a populated area.
I found out at this test by surprise that Xenia's fast wail signal isn't a fluke after all as I had previously suspected. You may be able to hear the dispatcher say in the beginning that this was the "emergency weather and nuclear alert system," so it would appear that Xenia uses the Fast Wail signal for Civil Defense purposes.
This particular SRNB is located on Lower Bellbrook Rd. near Colorado Dr. at the City of Xenia Water Treatment Plant and replaced a Thunderbolt 1000T at the former McKinley School building (about 0.5 miles away) in 2003 when Xenia got their new system. They have 10 of these SRNBs; 5 in the city and 5 in the township. They replaced 10 Thunderbolt sirens purchased by the city and township respectively after the April 1974 tornado, which failed during the September 20, 2000 F3 tornado due to a power outage, as the older sirens do not have backup power. The new sirens were funded by FEMA's Project Impact, which was a program aimed at effective mitigation strategies for communities vulnerable to disaster. Xenia was the first Project Impact community to receive the funding immediately following a disaster; they received the funds on October 20, 2000, one month after the tornado hit.
Greene County tests sirens on the First Monday of every month at 12:00 PM, unless severe weather is imminent at test time. The 10 sirens in Xenia/Xenia Twp. perform 1 minute of the fast wail "nuclear attack" signal following the regular 2 minute alert "tornado warning" signal during the months of January, April, July, and October. During all other months, the sirens in Xenia/Xenia Twp. only run for the 2 minute cycle. Enjoy!
