#74. Q: What’s the rule for “no brown in town”?
No brown shoes in town after 6.00pm has been an English aristocratic convention, but none of us are popping home first to get changed to go out after work these days. So we can go the event after 6.00pm, with whatever shoes we have been wearing. As long as the brown shoes are matching the outfit during the day, they will work at night too. Brown shoes should be dark in colour and this allows them work with light coloured suits. The worst combination is light brown or tan shoes with blue suits, so give that idea a miss.

I listened to a podcast recently advising against black suits. I wanted to model a black suit and show gentlemen that it doesn't have to be synomous with attending a funeral.

Intention outcomes: When you add a blue shirt, a navy tie, a blue pocketsquare, blue cufflinks, the starkness of the black in the suit starts to reduce and the colour contrasts kick in. No one would assume I was attending a funeral dressed like this. Gentlemen, you can wear your black suits anytime in business.
