My Point of View: In business, credibility can be created before competence is tested. We can sell them on trusting us by engineering the first impressions we want, so let's be intentional and let's be sharp.
ð© Classic Menswear Conventions â Know the Rule to Break the Rule
#49. Q: Whatâs the rule for stripes?
We can wear a striped shirt with a striped tie and even a pinstripe suit as long as we keep the stripe sizes well apart. For example, the shirt would have a narrow Bengal stripe, the tie stripe would be much wider and the pinstripe would be wider than the shirt and a little less wide than the tie. Or the pinstripe could be narrow, closer to the shirt stripe width, but the tie would be wider to create contrast. We are trying to find a combination where the stripes are not fighting with each other for supremacy.
ð The 4 Vs of Executive Presence: Visual, Vocal, Verbal, Value
ð¯ Who am I meeting and what impression do I want to create:
Japan Market Expansion Competition Awards night at the Tokyo American Club. I was a mentor from 2002-2006 and a lecturer from 2005 until now, teaching the participants how to present their business plans, which is worth a massive 35% of the score.
This is a festive occasion as the winners are announced, and so I went for a pink shirt to be a bit softer and to also stand out in the crowd.
Suit: Ermenegildo Zegna Trivero 1910 Trofeo suit, notch lapels, Barchetta breast pocket, 35mm double cuffs, flap pockets, side vents.
Shirt: Simon Carter London 1985 pink shirt with English Cuffs. Abbeyhorn Holme 1749 horn collars stays from Kirby Allison Dallas 2007
Tie: Brooks Brothers New York 1818 navy tie with white dots in a Windsor knot
Socks: Navy over the calf socks
âš Personal Flair
Cufflinks: Simon Carter London 1985 mother of pearl with black dots to pick up the tie pattern
Pocket Square: Amanda Christensen Sweden Stockholm 1885 blue and white polka dot pocket square to pick up the tie. Stabiliser from Kuska Fabrics Kyoto 1936.
Badge: Dale Carnegie New York 1912, silver corporate badge
Pen: Mont Blanc Hamburg 1906
Card Holder: Lanvin Paris 1889
Watch: Vintage 37mm rectangular steel case Longines Saint-Imier 1832 S30 EFCo which has a black face on the dial and a steel strap.
Fragrance: Floris London 1890 Special #127 â Churchillâs favourite
ð High Shine Shoes: Pollini San Mauro Pascoli 1953 Wingtip Derbys
Intention outcomes: I definitely stood out. Most men were not wearing ties and that fact alone made me differentiated, apart from the pink shirt. I was handing out one of the prizes so my time on show in front of everyone was completed with aplomb.
