I think missed opportunities is one of the most universal themes of humanity. In all our lives we have opportunities, but we don't take advantage of so many. That is sad to me. Hippocrates said, "Life is short, art is long and opportunity transient." It takes action to sieze opportunity and it takes awareness to see it. The window of time that open for us is short and that window will fall and remain shut for all of us at some point . The Fall season can teach us a lot about life.
What better music to express this feeling one gets when we missed out on opportunity than some good ole serialism/12-tone technique? This 12-tone composition is based on the following tone row: D,F#,F,C#,D#,E,C,G#,A,B,A#,G.
I will post a separate instructional video of everything I put into this composition. I did add some tonality and rest among the discord. You will especially want to hear the last minute of the piece when I descend with chordal mutation with a tone row on top played by a piano. It was one of those gems that you find when working with atonal music. I was glad it worked out that way. The end is a back-n-forth struggle between rest and discord.
