In this urgent and galvanising talk delivered at the Southeast Climate Alliance's Annual Gathering, Prof. Rupert Read β philosopher, activist, and co-founder of the Climate Majority Project β argues that 2026 represents a historic and dangerous turning point for humanity. With geopolitical instability exposing the fragility of fossil fuel dependency, secret government reports warning of ecosystem collapse, and mainstream consciousness finally catching up to the scale of the crisis, Read makes the case that climate advocates are no longer ahead of their time β they are, at last, exactly on time. He calls this a rare and remarkable confluence of circumstances that the climate movement must seize.
At the heart of Read's talk is the Climate Majority Project's #SAFER programme β Strategic Adaptation For Emergency Resilience β a framework for building genuine community-level resilience in the face of worsening climate disruption. Rather than waiting for top-down political solutions, #SAFER invites people to organise locally, adapt proactively, and prepare their communities for the shocks ahead. Read argues compellingly that this work β grassroots, practical, and grounded in honesty about our predicament β may be the most important thing that concerned citizens can do right now. The choice of how prepared and how connected we become, he insists, is still in our hands.
