Yes, you heard me right. I've changed my mind.
After years of being thoroughly fed up with the relentless drumbeat of "we must go to Mars," I've had a complete change of heart: let's go. Let's absolutely, wholeheartedly try to go to Mars, because when we do, we're going to discover just how unbelievably expensive, wildly dangerous, and spectacularly pointless it all is. You can't really achieve anything when you get there, it's nearly impossible to live there, and you'll come crawling back with your tail between your legs having learned, the hard way, that all this talk of interstellar colonisation is, well, guff. The thing is, we won't truly believe that until we actually give it a proper go. So fine, let's give it a proper go.
And maybe, just maybe, once we've exhausted ourselves on that red rock and wasted a truly eye-watering amount of money, we'll finally wake up and fall back in love with the one genuinely habitable planet we already have: this beautiful, battered, irreplaceable Earth.
