This pair of playlets, written by Kate Webster, based on scenarios taken from Rupert Read's book 'This Civilisation Is Finished' [we worked together on developing the concept of the paired playlets] lays out two alternative futures: One in which popular mobilisation after CoP26 led us in the direction of a challenging but manageable future. The other in which business as usual at CoPs led us in the direction of ... well, of escalating climate chaos and collapse.
The first scenario is one of transformative adaptation enacted. The second scenario is one of civilisational decline.
They feature the same basic characters and set-up, living in different futures, based on what they and many others did or didn’t do beginning in the early 2020s.
Watching these two back-to-back playlets now, in late 2022, is bitter-sweet. One is forced to acknowledge that the path we are on is already trending slightly closer to the second than to the first scenario. But even this has an upside: it makes it more urgent to take up the pathway of transformative adaptation. Given that we are off the cliff, we can grasp more deeply the necessity for this. We can heed the call to do it…
