I recently replied to a question asked by TRT World Now's interviewer about a situation that's only getting more urgent: how important is it for governments around the world to actually work together on the climate crisis? I started with my own country. Here in the UK we now have a new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham. He's genuinely popular right now, but I don't think that popularity survives unless he moves dramatically on the urgency of strategic adaptation to the climate crisis. So far he's said almost nothing about the wildfires ravaging this country, or the heatwaves we've endured alongside the rest of Europe, and he's promised more North Sea oil drilling, not less. That is a wholly inadequate basis for facing what's coming. We should be looking instead to countries actually making progress; Spain's climate plan, the resilience planning underway in the Nordic and Scandinavian countries, which matters as much for war readiness as for climate breakdown. This summer has been a rehearsal. Next summer will almost certainly be worse.
Yes — it is essential that governments everywhere work together on this. And my sincere hope is that with Andy Burnham as our new Prime Minister, the UK will step up and show the kind of bold leadership needed to help make that happen.
