I have one question I'd love to ask Mark Zuckerberg: what is it like to know that the net effect of your life has been massively destructive on the world? The damage Facebook has done to our politics over the past decade, and what Instagram has done to the mental health of our young people, it's appalling. Yes, there have been some upsides, community groups, connection, but the big picture is unmistakably negative for our planet and our people.
That's why, even though I very rarely agree with anything the current government does, I'm backing their proposed ban on social media for under-16s. Whatever your politics, surely we can all agree that the minds of our children should not be polluted by this deliberately addictive content, engineered by these companies to hook their youngest users. As we look back on ten years since the Brexit referendum, and forward to the futures of our young people, it really is high time we stopped letting social media be shoved down their throats and dumped into their brains.
