Crossing a dry lake. Following a forgotten stagecoach road. Exploring ancient petroglyphs hidden deep inside the Black Mountain Wilderness.
In this episode, we head out into the Mojave Desert near Hinkley, California to explore Black Canyon, a rugged route that has been used for centuries by Native peoples, miners, prospectors, and stagecoaches traveling across one of the harshest landscapes in the American West.
Along the way we cross Harper Dry Lake, visit the remains of an old stage station tied to the Panamint silver boom, explore strange shelters carved into rock, search the ruins of an old opal mining camp financed by Tiffany & Co., and hike into Inscription Canyon, home to thousands of ancient petroglyphs.
This is one of the most fascinating and overlooked historic landscapes in the Mojave Desert.
