Wyatt Earp is one of the most famous figures of the old west, but not a lot of people realize for about a decade he called San Diego home. At that time, what is know known as the Gaslamp Quarter, was a the city's red light district, The Stingaree.
In this video, we walk the actual streets Wyatt Earp knew, visiting historic locations from the boomtown era: the Horton Grand Hotel, the William Heath Davis House, the Backesto Building, the McGurck Block, and the future site of Horton Plaza Park, once the western end of Highway 80. We explore how the railroad price war triggered San Diego’s massive real-estate boom, why the city’s population exploded almost overnight, and how the Stingaree became one of the most dangerous districts on the West Coast.
