Planning and Carrying Out Investigations - Level 3 - Experimental Design
In this video Paul Andersen shows you how to plan and carry-out investigations in a mini-lesson on experimental design. Two examples are included in the video and two additional examples are included in the linked thinking slides.

TERMS
Data - measurements or statistics used for evidence
Hypothesis - a proposed explanation based on evidence
Investigation - a searching inquiry for obtaining facts
Phenomenon - observable events in the natural world (require explanations)
Plan - create activities for something
Prediction - to say that an event will happen in the future
Purpose - the reason for which something is done or created
Variable - a factor that can be changed, controlled or measured
Controlled - factors that are kept constant during an experiment
Independent - the manipulated variable in an experiment (cause)
Dependent - the responding variable in an experiment (effect)

This progression is based on the Science and Engineering Practices elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education. “Plan an investigation, and in the design: identify independent and dependent variables and controls, what tools are needed to do the gathering, how measurements will be recorded, and how many data are needed to support a claim. ”
