Planning and Carrying Out Investigations - Level 2 - Fair Tests
In this video Paul Andersen shows you how to plan and carryout investigations in a mini-lesson on fair tests. Two examples are included in the video and two additional examples are included in the linked thinking slides.
TERMS
Conduct - the way in which an investigation is carried out or managed.
Constant - something that remains unchanged
Data - measurements or statistics used for evidence
Evidence - anything presented to support a claim
Fair test - a test that controls all but one variable
Investigation - a searching inquiry for obtaining facts
Phenomenon - observable events in the natural world (require explanations)
Plan - create activities for something
Prediction - to say that an event will happen in the future
Purpose - the reason for which something is done or created
Trial - one in a number of repetitions in an experiment
Variable - a factor that can be changed, controlled or measured
This progression is based on the Science and Engineering Practices elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education. “Conduct an investigation collaboratively to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence, using fair tests in which variables are controlled and the number of trials considered.”

In this video Paul Andersen explains how to run the students t-test on a set of data. He starts by explaining conceptually how a t-value can be used to determine the statistical difference between two samples. He then shows you how to use a t-test to test the null hypothesis. He finally gives you a separate data set that can be used to practice running the test.
