Michael Donnellan does not treat Plato's account as mythology to be interpreted or allegory to be decoded. His ten years of fieldwork in southwestern Iberia have produced, in his view, physical confirmation of what Plato described in the Timaeus and Critias point by point, and his position is simply that Plato was correct about the location, correct about the civilisation that existed there, and correct about what happened to it.
The conquistadors provide an unexpected form of corroboration. When the educated and literate among them arrived in the Americas and encountered what they found there, some of them said it directly: Plato was right. These were men who had read the classical texts, who knew the account, and who recognised in what they were seeing the other world that Plato had described. The fact that they made that connection on arrival, before any scholarly debate had formed around it, is, for Michael, one of the more underappreciated pieces of evidence in the entire Atlantis discussion.
