"Every Breath You Take", by English rock band The Police, was written by now well-known lead vocalist Sting. It was the group's biggest hit topping the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at #1 in 1983. It also topped the Billboard Top Tracks album chart as well. Sting wrote the song in 1982 after his separation from his wife, and the beginning of his relationship with another woman, an affair that was widely condemned. Sting had noted in an interview that the song was misinterpreted as being a gentle little love song when it was quite the opposite. The song was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and Record of the Year, winning in the first two categories. The song was also ranked 84th on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", the highest position of any new wave rock release. It also ranked #25 on Billboard's Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs and is considered the band's signature song.
