“EV SALES EXPERT” Gets It VERY Wrong — USED EVs Don’t Prove the ZEV Mandate Works!

An “EV sales expert” on LinkedIn has used fast-selling USED electric cars to mock calls for a review of the UK ZEV Mandate.
There's just one rather important problem…
The ZEV Mandate applies to NEW vehicle registrations — not used cars.
In this video I look at the claim, the Auto Trader figures behind it, and the crucial context that disappears when impressive-sounding statistics are turned into sweeping conclusions about EV demand.
Yes, used EV sales are growing strongly.
Yes, some 3–5-year-old electric cars are selling remarkably quickly.
But does that prove there's sufficient consumer demand for NEW EVs to satisfy government-mandated targets?
Absolutely not.
We look at:
• Auto Trader's claim that 3–5-year-old EVs are selling in around 20 days
• Why days-to-sell is NOT the same thing as market share
• SMMT figures showing used BEV transactions rising dramatically
• The rather important 5.5% used-EV market share behind that growth
• Why depreciation can make a used EV far more attractive than the same vehicle was when new
• Why comparing £20,000 used EV demand with £40,000 new EV demand is fundamentally flawed
• What the ZEV Mandate actually regulates
• And why the Government itself considers the mandate worthy of review.
I'm not arguing that nobody wants electric cars.
Clearly they do.
The question is whether natural consumer demand for NEW EVs at the required volumes and prices is sufficient to deliver mandated targets without creating serious distortions elsewhere in the new-car market.
That's a very different question from:
“Are cheap used EVs selling quickly?”
Watch to the end and decide for yourself whether an “EV sales expert” should know the difference.
