The Great EV Spin: When ONE Statistic Becomes FIVE Different Claims! 🤡
#ElectricCars #ZEVmandate #EVs
One statistic about EV discounts — and suddenly we're being told that EV demand is strong, the ZEV Mandate is working, manufacturers have confidence, drivers are switching and we're effectively already hitting the target.
But does the evidence actually prove all of that?
In this video, I examine claims being made following a Times report that average discounts on new electric cars fell to around 11% in July — reportedly the lowest level for more than a year.
That statistic is interesting.
But what happens next is even more interesting.
The reduction in discounts is being presented as evidence that EV demand must be strengthening.
Then that becomes evidence that the ZEV Mandate is working.
Then we're told manufacturers have confidence.
Then we're told drivers have confidence.
And finally we're told that because the effective ZEV Mandate requirement may be considerably below the headline 33% target, we're effectively already there.
That's an enormous amount to conclude from one statistic.
So I'm going through the argument piece by piece.
Why have EV discounts fallen?
Does a reduction from previously enormous discounts automatically prove strong underlying retail demand?
What's happening with supply?
How much EV demand comes from private buyers compared with fleets, salary sacrifice and company cars?
And if the official 2026 ZEV Mandate headline target is 33%, why are people now celebrating an "effective" figure closer to 25%?
There's also another important piece of context.
We're talking about July, immediately before the September registration plate change — traditionally an unusual period for the UK private new-car market because many buyers simply wait a few weeks for the new plate.
None of this means EV sales aren't increasing.
They are.
The question is whether the evidence supports the much bigger conclusions being attached to those figures.
Because there's a huge difference between:
"EV discounts fell in July."
and:
"The ZEV Mandate is working and consumers have embraced electric cars."
One is a statistic.
The other is an interpretation.
And that's exactly what we're examining.
Let me know what YOU think in the comments.
Are falling discounts evidence of genuine strengthening private EV demand — or are we watching one statistic being stretched far beyond what it actually proves?

I’ve been using the Hilo blood pressure monitor for years — and it has genuinely helped me control and lower my blood pressure.
Now it’s had a major upgrade.
It doesn’t just monitor blood pressure 24/7…
It now tracks:
✔ Sleep
✔ Steps
✔ Activity
All inside the same bracelet.
For me, the biggest advantage has always been:
• Continuous blood pressure monitoring
• No “white coat syndrome” readings
• Real-world data instead of snapshot readings
And now having sleep and step tracking built into the same app just makes it even more useful.
