Hi, I'm Daniel with etrailer, and today we're going to take a look at and I'm going to show how to install the Roadmaster Smart Diode Kit on our 2026 Ford Bronco. Ford Broncos are super popular, flat towable vehicles. And I'll go over the five main components you're going to need in order to get your flat tow setup started. We're going to start here at the vehicle. It's going to be our base plate. You're going to have your tow bar.
You're going to have your braking system, your safety cables, and your diode wiring. Some of the things I recommend for the Bronco specifically is going to be a charge line kit. This isn't required, but it's really nice to have because it'll give you a trickle charge while you're traveling down the road so you don't ride to the campsite with your towed vehicle's battery dead. Now, the other thing is going to be a stoplight switch kit. And that's going to be for some of your braking systems in order for you to determine if this is braking behind your motor home while you're driving.
What your diode wiring kit is going to allow you to do, it's going to allow you to utilize your turn signals, brake lights, and running lights from your motor home and transfer them to your towed vehicle's taillights. Make everything safe and legal when you're out on the road. When it comes to this kit, this is really nice. Once you get it installed, all you have to do is plug in and you're good to go. It's a lot nicer than those stick-on kits that you have to set up every time you want to take a trip.
When it comes to smart diode kits, you will have to get incandescent or LEDs depending on what type of lights you have back here. And like I said, you have everything you need to get this installed, and all you have to do is plug this in with your umbilical. Now there's going to be two versions of this kit. One, it's going to come with your umbilical as well as your six pole on the front. And the other kit's just going to have your diodes and everything you need to get it installed.
So this is great if you already have these from a previous setup, you don't have to buy everything. Other than that, as far as install goes, the smart diodes are really nice because there's only two of them instead of four. So there's not a lot of space behind those taillights, so sticking one behind there is a lot easier than your regular kit with those four. Now, if you're wanting to get these installed yourself, follow along, and in this video, we'll walk you through it. Starting off, I started routing our diode wiring. Now you may notice we already have our base plate installed. This is the Blue Ox base plate. Yours might be slightly different, but ours came with a bracket for our six-way plug. So we started here with our wiring. I routed it over to our driver's side, back underneath. And from here, I was able to route it straight up into our engine bay. And I went around our battery. And the white wire, this is our ground wire. So from the very end, I just stripped this all the way back, and I'm going to get this cut to length, get an eyelet crimped, and get this grounded right on a factory ground stud right here. I'll crimp on our ring terminal and get this put on our stud. Now you could use a 13 millimeter socket and remove this nut and put it in front of our factory ground. But I actually did find a nut that will go right on this stud. So I'm going to put it like this. And get this one tightened down with a 10 millimeter. The rest of our wires, I routed around, zip tied a loop up because we will need to tap into this for our specific braking system. And then I routed it down towards the frame. Here's where our diodes are coming down, and I went into the frame. So I got some loom. I covered it in that just so it doesn't rub up against the metal. And from here, I went into the frame. I used a piece of airline tubing. Or you could use a piece of thick ga
