Throwback to 2019, when a mother orangutan and her baby were rescued from a fragmented area of habitat.
Mama Sifa and her young infant were discovered near the village of Tempurukan in Ketapang, West Borneo. Fires had damaged their forest home and cut them off from natural food sources, forcing them into nearby plantations in search of something to eat.
The rescue was carried out by the Ministry of Forestry, supported by our partners at YIARI, and assisted by local residents.
When the team found them, both mother and baby were weak, dehydrated and malnourished. With no safe habitat left, there was no choice but to act.
After receiving immediate medical care, the pair were carefully translocated to a safer, protected area of forest - far from human activity and rich in food and shelter.
Thanks to quick community action and collaboration with the authorities, both orangutans got a second chance!
