On June 16th, 2024 Alberta completed its coal-phase-out. The province once used coal to generate 80% of its electricity. The phase-out represents a massive cut in greenhouse gas emissions. The trouble is a lot of the coal generation was replaced by natural gas which provides 60% as many emissions as coal. The province could easily displace a lot of the gas generation with renewable energy, save money for consumers and attract billions in investment, but they've chosen to slam the brakes on the booming renewable energy industry. We talk to Scott MacDougall of the Pembina Insitute about what Alberta could do.
