Over the past five years, the number of games published to Steam has increased by 792%. In practice, this means that we’ve moved from an average of 10 games published per week to 10 games published every day.
With this amount of competition, simply putting your title on Steam no longer guarantees reasonable exposure to the PC audience, or reasonable revenue. For most indies, in fact, it guarantees the opposite.
To have any shot at success in today’s ultra competitive market, independent developers must look beyond Steam as their primary marketing tool, and focus on other traffic sources.
