Emma Hurst was first elected in 2019, making her the second member of the Animal Justice Party to be elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council in Southeast Australia.

Emma is a registered psychologist with a long history as an animal liberation advocate and since being elected Emma has established and chaired a Parliamentary Inquiry into the Use of Battery Cages for Hens in the Egg Production Industry. Also, Emma will serve as Deputy Chair into an Inquiry she established regarding the Exhibition of cetaceans, and of exotic animals in circuses. She opposes Australian ag-gag laws, she’s writing legislation to ban puppy farms, and she advocates for tougher penalties for acts of animal cruelty, suggesting animals ought to be recognised as domestic violence victims in their own right.
