There’s something disarming and captivating about the contradictory feelings this new Valencia’s trio brings out in us. On one hand, the wonderful contrast between “Dark Room” and a bunch of tracks that seem made to let the light in, and on the other, the strange clash between a melodic naive-pop sound, which owes a big part of its character to the nostalgic and languid way they deploy their voices, and the no-sweet-or-tame use of the instrumentation: a powerful rhythm section, as driving as it is grounding to the whole thing, and a cranky guitar that at times can scratch away like coarse-grain sandpaper, with its rough edges pushed even further by the tape hiss of a humble four-track, which in the capable hands of long-time scene veteran Néstor Sevillano gives the whole thing a proper DIY underground feel.
From today on, El Cuarto Oscuro is going to become one of your favourite places, somewhere you can disappear for a while from all the crap this world throws at you and build your own little one instead, made by three Terreta old-timers who, no matter how much time goes by, never seem to stop surprising us.
