"Put a rope around, rush into the ground"
I was writing a song about dying, when I noticed that everyone who writes or sings about death, dies ... and usually tragically.
Michael Hutchence was an Australian singer, songwriter and actor. Hutchence co-founded the rock band INXS, which sold over 75 million records worldwide.
In 1993, for INXS' ninth studio album, Hutchence penned "Cut Down Your Roses", including the line 'Put a rope around, rush into the ground'. The band entered a period of declining commercial success and lukewarm reviews.
In 1992 Hutchence was hit by a taxi while riding a bike. The resulting brain damage led to periods of depression, increased levels of aggression and a dependence on pain killers. In 1997, in his hotel, depressed over a custody dispute, Hutchence hung himself with his snakeskin belt.
Side Note: I quickly reworked the theme of my tune to be about returning home through space and time (totally not dying). I then dropped the lyrics and turned the melody into a guitar instrumental. That should be safe (youtu.be/1FuUKGrjEGY)!
