"And When My Life is Over..."
I was writing a song about dying, when I noticed that everyone who writes or sings about death, dies ... and usually tragically.
In 1970, Leon Russell wrote "A Song for You" for his first solo album. The song is about a Rock Star evaluating his life as he dies. The singer states "And when my life is over", his love should remember when they were alone, not when he was on stage.
Donnie Hathaway recorded the song in 1971. He died committing suicide by jumping out his hotel window.
Karen Carpenter recorded the song in 1972. She died at the age of 32.
Whitney Houston also recorded the song. Two years later, she died in her bathtub under of the influence of cocaine.
Amy Winehouse recorded the song the year she died. She was 27.
Side Note: I quickly reworked the theme of my tune to be about returning home through space and time (totally not dying). I then dropped the lyrics and turned the melody into a guitar instrumental. That should be safe (youtu.be/1FuUKGrjEGY)!
