For over 30 years, we have been studying shark courtship and mating behaviors in the Dry Tortugas!
This year, two of our Giant Ocean Tank divers accompanied our shark scientists to Florida. Together, they surveyed the protected mating zone (by kayak!) within the Dry Tortugas National Park, tagged #NurseSharks with accelerometer tags + camera tags, and documented mating behavior. They even tagged one of the smallest nurse sharks ever found – a neonate female pup about 30cm long!
This research allows our scientists to get an overall picture of what the mating season looks like for nurse sharks, which helps us build relevant conservation information for this (and other) shark species.
